BIO

(1981 - Ongoing)

Often art arrives in moments.

It finds its form in the uniqueness of everyday life: the light filtering through leaves, the street sign, the unexpected conversation with a stranger, or the rhythmic tapping of drumsticks. In these instances, seemingly mundane ideas coalesce spontaneously into a cohesive, enlightening insight. It is here, in these unplanned moments, where the realisation itself becomes the art. Through close observation and analysis of the surrounding world, Burke's art engages deeply with themes of spirituality, consumerism, entertainment, social media, joy, and vulnerability. His work manifests in various forms, from readymade objects and interactive installations to traditional paintings and dynamic sculptures. The artist searches for authenticity, truth and value in a world full of signs, symbols, distractions and layers of meaning.

Burke's journey into the realms of creative expression began at the age of six through drumming. The rhythmic engagement and the physicality of the act developed his desire to rediscover this feeling of pure clarity and a sense of fulfilment in other elements of life as well. His academic passage through the Manchester Metropolitan University further moulded his interest in Conceptual Art, especially during his final show, which questioned the commercial aspects of art and its consumption. This pivotal moment deepened his exploration into whether art could harmonise with business, community, and life itself.

The passion for design was shaped by his deep admiration for hip hop culture, graffiti, and pop art. These influences inspired him to blend diverse elements into novel, unique creations while valuing conceptual simplicity. His art is not just to be viewed but experienced, inviting audience interaction to break down barriers and foster accessibility.

Burke's artistic vision extends beyond his individual creations. He envisions a creative hub where professionals from diverse disciplines can converge. The Art House, a multi-functional space in London and New York, is the embodiment of this vision. It offers residencies, exhibitions, and events that foster community and artist support. This hub was born from Acrylicize, a dynamic studio founded as a continuation of his degree exhibition specialising in custom art and installations, which leverages art for storytelling and brand expression. It blends in-house creation with external collaborations to enrich cultural identities and support the arts locally and globally. Here, art becomes a communal dialogue, echoing Burke's belief in art's transformative power to navigate modern life's complexities and unite people across cultural divides.

The artist has simultaneously displayed his solo works at prominent events such as  the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition and Miami Basel Week. With the desire to enhance the accessibility of his creations, he developed collectable series such as Lego and Stars, as well as interactive pieces like Everything and Nothing or Visual Whispers. A notable public commission of his is In Anticipation, located in Shoreditch, London. This sculpture explores vulnerability, anticipation and optimism through reimagining a classical heroic statue, inviting viewers to reflect on transient, intimate moments and personal narratives within an urban context. James Burke's art revolves around a virtuous cycle where truth serves as the foundation, leading to expression, fostering connection, and culminating in love, embodying his belief that love is always the answer.
